Bala Sharks – A Striking Addition to Your Aquarium
Bala Sharks (Balantiocheilos melanopterus) are a stunning freshwater species that appeal to both beginner and experienced aquarists. Native to the rivers and lakes of Southeast Asia, they are also known as Silver Sharks or Tricolor Sharks. Their sleek, silver bodies contrast beautifully with bold black fins and vibrant orange tail tips, making them a visually captivating choice for any aquarium.
These peaceful fish are known for their graceful swimming and social nature, making them an excellent addition to community tanks. Their active movements add life and energy to the tank while maintaining a calm and elegant presence.
Why We Recommend Bala Sharks:
- Peaceful Nature – Ideal for community aquariums, they coexist well with a variety of fish.
- Active Swimmers – Their constant movement creates a dynamic and engaging display.
- Great Tankmates – They can live harmoniously with Tetras, Barbs, Gouramis, Rainbowfish, Loaches, Corydoras, and Livebearers.
- Easy to Feed – As omnivores, they accept high-quality flakes, pellets, live, and frozen foods.
- Low Maintenance – Suitable for both beginners and experienced fish keepers.
Recommended Tank Conditions:
- Temperature: 24-28°C (75-82°F)
- pH Level: 6.5-7.5
- KH (Carbonate Hardness): 4-10 dKH
- Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons or more (best kept in groups of three or more)
Care Guidelines:
- Diet: Bala Sharks thrive on a varied diet. Provide high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms to ensure optimal health and coloration.

- Tank Size & Growth: Bala Sharks can grow up to 12-14 inches (30-35 cm), requiring a spacious tank to accommodate their size and activity levels.
- Origin: Native to the freshwater rivers and lakes of Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia, they prefer slow-moving waters and often swim in the middle to upper levels of the tank.
