Blue Dolphin Cichlid Care Guide
About the Blue Dolphin Cichlid
- Scientific Name: Cyrtocara moorii
- Common Name: Blue Dolphin Cichlid
- Family: Cichlidae
- Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
- Adult Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches)
- Lifespan: 8 - 10 years
Tank Setup & Environment
A minimum tank size of 200 liters (53 gallons) is recommended for a single Blue Dolphin Cichlid. They do best in aquariums with plenty of rock formations, caves, and hiding spots that replicate their natural habitat. A soft sandy substrate is ideal, as they may sift through it while foraging.
Water Conditions
- pH Level: 7.8 - 8.6
- Temperature: 23°C - 28°C (73°F - 82°F)
- Filtration & Flow: A strong filtration system is essential to maintain water quality, along with good water flow to keep conditions stable.
Diet & Feeding
Blue Dolphin Cichlids are omnivores and require a varied diet. Their diet should include high-quality pellets and flakes, live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms, and occasional vegetable matter to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Mates & Behavior
Blue Dolphin Cichlids are generally peaceful but can become territorial, especially during breeding. Providing plenty of space and hiding spots helps reduce aggression.
Suitable tank mates include other Lake Malawi cichlids of similar size and temperament. It is best to avoid overly aggressive or highly territorial species.
Blue Dolphin Cichlids are a striking and rewarding addition to any properly maintained cichlid aquarium.
