Chilumba Cichlid Care

The Chilumba Cichlid, a striking member of the Lake Malawi mbuna group, is known for its vivid coloration and active, territorial behavior. This semi-aggressive species is an excellent choice for aquarists looking to create a vibrant and authentic Lake Malawi biotope.

• Care Level: Easy – Chilumba Cichlids are hardy and well-suited for aquarists with experience maintaining stable water conditions.
• Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 350 liters is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and territories. Include plenty of rocks and caves to mimic their natural rocky habitat and allow for hiding spots.
• Water Parameters: Maintain a temperature of 25-29°C and a pH between 7.8-8.6 to replicate the hard, alkaline waters of Lake Malawi.
• Diet: As omnivores, Chilumba Cichlids thrive on a diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, supplemented with plant-based foods like spirulina and occasional live or frozen treats such as brine shrimp. Avoid overfeeding protein-rich foods to prevent health issues.
• Behavior: Semi-aggressive by nature, they are territorial and may show aggression toward similar species, especially during breeding. Providing adequate hiding places and breaking up sightlines can help manage aggression and promote harmony in the tank.
