The Electric Blue Acara Cichlid (Andinoacara pulcher hybrid) is a vibrant hybrid of the Blue Acara Cichlid. While there is some discussion about its exact origins, many believe it was created by hybridizing with the Blue Ram Cichlid (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) and subsequently line-breeding to enhance the "electric blue" trait. Regardless of its origins, this beautiful fish can breed with its own kind, producing offspring with similar coloration.
To thrive, the Electric Blue Acara Cichlid prefers a sandy substrate and ample hiding spots, such as clay pots, driftwood, and rock structures. While it typically avoids eating decorative plants, it does enjoy digging, so plants that can anchor to driftwood or rocks are recommended. This cichlid generally coexists well with other peaceful fish that are too large to be considered prey. However, it can be quite territorial during breeding periods. Small or delicate invertebrates, like dwarf shrimp, should not be housed with it, but more robust and larger invertebrates, such as snails, might be suitable companions in a sufficiently large aquarium. To encourage spawning, it's best to minimize or avoid tankmates from other species.
Cichlid Diet & Feeding
Feeding the Electric Blue Acara Cichlid is straightforward, as they are not picky eaters. They readily accept high-quality dry, frozen, and live meaty foods. A supplement of vegetable matter is also necessary. Providing a diverse diet is essential to maintain the fish's health and vibrant coloration.
