German Black Ram Cichlid (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi “German Black”)

The German Black Ram Cichlid is a rare and stunning variant of the popular ram cichlid. Known for its intense black coloration in both males and females, this unique fish is a standout choice for aquarists looking for something special. Dwarf cichlids, including rams, are well-loved for their vibrant colors, small size, and engaging personalities. While typically more peaceful than larger cichlids, the German Black Ram can be slightly more aggressive than other ram varieties and does not always breed true, making it even rarer in the hobby.

Ideal Tank Setup

To keep these fish happy and healthy, a tank with a soft, sandy substrate and plenty of hiding spots like clay pots, driftwood, and rocks is recommended. They do well in planted aquariums but also need some open swimming space. The German Black Ram is generally peaceful but can become territorial, especially during spawning. While small shrimp and delicate invertebrates should be avoided as tankmates, larger shrimp and snails may coexist in a spacious setup. If breeding is a goal, it’s best to keep them in a species-only tank or limit tankmates to prevent stress.

Feeding

These fish are not picky eaters and will readily accept a variety of high-quality dry, frozen, and live meaty foods. A well-balanced diet with plenty of variety is essential for maintaining their health and vibrant coloration.
