Gold Nugget Pleco (Baryancistrus xanthellus)
A Stunning and Iconic Pleco for Experienced Aquarists
The Gold Nugget Pleco is one of the most striking and sought-after suckermouth catfish in the hobby. Native to the Xingu River basin in Brazil, this species thrives in highly oxygenated, fast-flowing waters. Its bold yellow spots and distinctive fin markings make it a true centerpiece fish, but its care requirements mean it’s best suited for experienced aquarists.
Natural Habitat & Behavior
- Found in the Volta Grande do Rio Xingu and the Rio Iriri, where it lives in warm, turbulent waters.
- Juveniles form small groups under flat rocks in shallow rapids, while adults prefer larger submerged boulders with fast-moving water.
- Highly territorial – best kept alone unless housed in a very large aquarium with plenty of hiding spots and visual barriers.
Tank Requirements
- Minimum Tank Size: 120L (30 gallons) for juveniles, but larger tanks (over 200L) are recommended for adults.
- Substrate: Soft sand with smooth rocks and bogwood for natural hiding spots.
- Filtration & Flow: Needs strong water movement and high oxygen levels—use powerheads or a river-tank manifold for optimal conditions.
- Lighting: No special requirements, but prefers shaded areas in the tank.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 25-30°C (77-86°F)
- pH: 6.0 - 7.2
- Hardness: Up to 15 dH
- Water Quality: Requires regular partial water changes due to its high waste production.
Feeding & Diet
While often thought of as an algae eater, the Gold Nugget Pleco requires a varied diet with a strong focus on vegetable matter.
- Staple foods: Algae wafers, sinking pellets, and high-fiber plant-based foods.
- Fresh vegetables: Cucumber, zucchini, lettuce, squash—these should be offered regularly.
- Protein supplements: Occasional treats of bloodworms or chopped prawns, but meaty foods should be limited to prevent digestive issues.
- Natural behavior: In the wild, they graze on biofilm and aufwuchs—a type of algae that contains tiny invertebrates.
Compatibility & Tankmates
Due to its territorial nature, this fish is best kept as the only bottom-dweller in the tank unless housed in a very large aquarium.
- Best Tankmates: Peaceful mid-to-upper level fish, such as medium-sized characins (tetras) or rheophilic cichlids that enjoy similar water conditions.
- Avoid: Other plecos and bottom-dwellers, as they may trigger aggression.
Breeding
Breeding the Gold Nugget Pleco in captivity is extremely difficult but possible for dedicated aquarists.
- Cave Spawners: Require snug clay or slate caves with a single entrance.
- Spawning Triggers: Increased water flow (extra powerhead) and cooler water changes may help induce breeding.
- Ideal Conditions: Warm (30°C), soft, acidic water with high oxygenation.
Gold Nugget Pleco Variants
Several variations of Baryancistrus xanthellus exist, each identified by L-numbers:
- L018 & L085: Found in the Volta Grande do Rio Xingu and Rio Iriri. L018 is thought to be the juvenile form of L085.
- L177: From further upstream, with larger yellow spots.
- LDA060: Features irregularly shaped spots or blotches.
