The Green Terror Cichlid is a stunning and popular choice among freshwater aquarium enthusiasts. Native to Peru and Ecuador, this species develops vibrant coloration as it matures, with males displaying the most intense blues and greens along with a bold orange trim on the dorsal fin and tail. Females are also strikingly colorful. Males tend to grow larger and develop elongated dorsal and anal fins, along with the characteristic nuchal hump seen in many cichlid species.

Habitat & Tank Setup

To thrive, the Green Terror requires a spacious aquarium with a sandy substrate and plenty of hiding spots such as driftwood, rock formations, and clay pots. While they don’t usually eat live plants, they love to dig, so floating plants or hardy species that attach to rocks and wood are ideal.

As the name suggests, this cichlid can be territorial, particularly in smaller tanks. They can coexist with other large cichlids, plecos, and catfish in a well-structured, large aquarium with broken lines of sight. However, during breeding, their aggression increases significantly. If spawning is planned, it's best to keep them as a bonded pair without other tankmates. To encourage natural pairing, raise a group of juveniles together and allow them to select their mates. Shrimp and small invertebrates should be avoided as tankmates, as they will be seen as food. Due to their size and waste output, regular water changes are essential.
