Medusa Pleco (Ancistrus ranunculus)

Overview

The Medusa Pleco, named for its unique head bristles resembling Medusa’s hair, is a fascinating bottom-dweller from the fast-flowing rivers of South America. Native to the Rio Xingu and Tocantins Rivers, this species thrives in well-oxygenated, rocky environments with strong currents. With proper care, they can live for 5 to 8 years, making them a great long-term addition to an aquarium.

Size & Tank Requirements

  • Adult Size: 11 - 14 cm (4.3 - 5.5 inches)
  • Minimum Tank Size: 100 liters (26+ gallons)
  • Water Temperature: 24 - 28°C (75 - 82°F)
  • pH Range: 6.5 - 7.5
  • Water Hardness: 7 - 22 dGH (125 - 392 ppm)
  • Tank Setup: Strong filtration, rocky hiding spots, bogwood, and a moderate water flow.

Temperament & Compatibility

Medusa Plecos are generally peaceful with other fish, but they can become territorial with other bottom dwellers, especially if space is limited. They do well with tankmates such as tetras, peaceful dwarf cichlids, and other community fish. Avoid aggressive or highly territorial species to prevent stress and competition for space.

Feeding & Diet

Unlike other Ancistrus species that primarily graze on algae, the Medusa Pleco has a higher preference for protein-based foods. A balanced diet should include:
High-quality sinking pellets and wafers
Frozen or live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp (offered occasionally)
Some plant-based foods such as algae wafers for variety
Driftwood or bogwood, which aids digestion and provides essential fiber

Breeding

Breeding Medusa Plecos can be challenging but rewarding. They are cave spawners, with males guarding and fanning the eggs. To encourage breeding:
✔ Maintain slightly acidic water conditions
✔ Provide dim lighting and plenty of narrow caves or PVC pipes
✔ Males will guard fertilized eggs, which hatch in about 5 days
✔ Fry can be fed newly hatched brine shrimp or crushed flakes once they emerge

Why Choose the Medusa Pleco?

Unique Appearance – Eye-catching bristles on their head, especially in males
Peaceful Nature – Great for a calm community aquarium
Low Maintenance – Hardy and adaptable to most setups
Thrives in a Natural Setup – Perfect for tanks with rock structures and driftwood

For aquarists looking to add a distinctive and peaceful pleco to their aquarium, the Medusa Pleco is a fantastic choice!
