The Lemon Tetra (Hyphessobrycon pulchripinnis) is a popular and striking freshwater aquarium fish, known for its vibrant yellow color and peaceful nature. This tetra’s bright yellow hue and schooling behavior make it a standout in any peaceful community tank, especially when paired with a dark substrate in planted aquariums.
Typically, the Lemon Tetra occupies the upper and middle areas of the tank, though it will often swim and feed closer to the bottom as well. It does well with other small, peaceful fish, but be cautious with small adult shrimp, as they may become prey. Larger, peaceful invertebrates are generally good tankmates. To thrive, the Lemon Tetra should be kept in schools of at least 6 individuals. Though tank-raised, this species still prefers soft, acidic water rich in tannins and leaf litter, which mimics its natural habitat. Clean water is essential for its health, and it will flourish in a planted tank with floating plants.
This fish is not particularly fussy about food, but a varied diet of high-quality flake, pellets, and both frozen and live omnivorous foods will keep it healthy and vibrant. Regularly changing up its diet helps maintain its optimal coloration and overall health.
