Description
Overview
MacCulloch's Rainbowfish is a small species, typically growing to about 7 cm (almost 3 inches) in length. As one of the smaller members of the Melanotaenia genus, it has a silvery white body, sometimes with a yellowish hue, decorated with 6-8 reddish-brown stripes along its sides. There are two main color variations of this species. The more colorful fish, typically found in Papua New Guinea or the northern Cape York Peninsula in Australia, have a noticeable yellowish tint on both their body and fins, with distinct black striping on the dorsal and anal fins. Fish from coastal Queensland, on the other hand, tend to have duller colors and lighter stripes, and sometimes the fin stripes are absent. However, these Queensland variants are still popular among aquarists for their striking red fins, which provide a beautiful contrast against their less vibrant bodies. These fish are often sold under the name Red-finned Rainbowfish, but they are not a separate species—just a variant of MacCulloch's Rainbowfish.
