Ornate Bichir (Polypterus ornatipinnis)
The Ornate Bichir is one of the most visually striking bichir species, featuring a beautiful black and gold pattern. It is a fantastic choice for large predator aquariums and is highly sought after by enthusiasts of big, ornamental fish.
Resembling an eel, the Ornate Bichir is sometimes called a "dinosaur eel," though it is not a true eel. This species is extremely hardy and has a unique ability to breathe atmospheric air, thanks to its modified swim bladder. This allows it to survive in low-oxygen environments and even remain out of water for short periods if kept moist.
While it is primarily nocturnal, the Ornate Bichir often becomes more active during the day once it has settled into its tank. It is not aggressive but will eat smaller fish and invertebrates that fit in its mouth. However, it generally ignores larger tankmates and can coexist peacefully with other bichirs, though occasional territorial behavior may occur. To keep an Ornate Bichir healthy, a spacious aquarium with plenty of floor space, hiding spots, and strong filtration is essential.
Bichirs are known escape artists, so a secure lid is necessary to prevent them from getting out. Since they need to surface for air, they should always have access to the top of the tank.
Feeding
The Ornate Bichir is not picky when it comes to food. A well-balanced diet of high-quality live, frozen, and dry meaty foods will keep it in top condition.
