Pacific Signifier Blue Eye Rainbowfish
Pacific Signifier Blue Eye Rainbowfish
The Pacific Blue Eye Signifer Rainbowfish (Pseudomugil signifer) is a stunning and adaptable nano species, perfect for planted aquariums. It’s the most widespread and variable blue-eye rainbowfish, native to freshwater and brackish rivers and estuaries along the Western Australian coast. Known for forming large schools in vegetated areas, this species thrives in densely planted tanks. Although some populations live in brackish or marine environments, this isn't a requirement for aquarium care.
Males display vibrant yellow-to-orange hues on their bodies and fins, especially during displays or competitions with other males. Females also have similar coloration, though less pronounced. Both sexes feature striking blue eyes that contrast beautifully with their colorful bodies.
This rainbowfish is peaceful with similarly sized tank mates, though it may prey on very small shrimp fry. Keeping a school of six or more, including multiple males, helps enhance their coloration and natural behaviors. A spacious tank with plenty of plants will reduce stress on subdominant males. Using a darker substrate can also bring out their best colors.
Rainbowfish are popular in freshwater aquariums due to their peaceful nature, hardiness, and vibrant colors. Unlike some larger species in the family, Pacific Blue Eye Signifer Rainbowfish are suitable for tanks with adult dwarf shrimp and non-aggressive invertebrates.
