The Red and Black Parrot is a striking hybrid cichlid, created by crossbreeding various Central American Cichlids. This fish has a distinct round body with a beak-like mouth. Juveniles start off dark in color and develop their vibrant red and black markings as they mature.
The Red and Black Parrot requires an aquarium of at least 200L (55 gallons) with a sandy substrate, rocks, and plenty of hiding spaces. Live plants should be kept in pots to prevent them from being uprooted. While generally peaceful with similar-sized fish, they can be timid and may be bullied by more aggressive cichlids.
These fish are typically infertile and will not successfully breed in a home aquarium. While they may lay eggs in caves, the males are often infertile, so the eggs rarely develop.
The Red and Black Parrot is an omnivore and will readily accept most prepared and frozen foods, including freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex, ocean plankton, high-quality flake food, and cichlid pellets.
