Natural Habitat & Distribution

The Whiptail Catfish (Rineloricaria parva) is native to Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina, where it thrives in both clear and whitewater environments. It’s commonly found among leaf litter on sandy riverbeds, blending into its surroundings.

Size & Tank Requirements

  • Maximum Size: 4.4″ (11 cm)
  • Minimum Tank Size: 30″ x 12″ x 12″ (75 cm x 30 cm x 30 cm) – around 67.5 liters
  • Behavior: Mostly inactive, making it ideal for a peaceful community setup. A small group can be housed together without issues.

Tank Setup & Maintenance

For a natural environment, consider a biotope-style setup with:

  • Fine sand substrate, covered with dried leaves (oak and beech are safe choices).
  • Driftwood and twisted branches for hiding spots.
  • Rocks, caves, or PVC pipes for shelter and potential spawning sites.
  • Moderate to dim lighting, as this species prefers shaded areas.
  • Planted tanks are also suitable, provided the lighting isn’t too intense.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 68-77°F (20-25°C)
  • pH Range: 6.0 - 7.5
  • Hardness: 2 - 15°H
